Film Opening Screenplay

Introduction

This tasks consists of steps 6, 7, & 8, of the assignment with the last blog post. Step 6 was to write the screenplay itself after all the planning had been done, step 7 was to analyze our choices and explain how it added to the genre and/or narrative of our films, and step 8 was to reflect on the process.

STEP 6: Write the Screenplay

STEP 7: Highlight Media Language Choices

The handheld camera as we follow Izzy and Sara through the park is an intentional

choice. This adds to both the genre and narrative by making us feel as though we are in

this romantic setting and displaying a more personal dynamic between the two

characters shown. The whip pan between Ash and the other girls was intentional as it

helped add to the narrative. Showing how shocked the girls were to run into someone

from their school in a public place, one the characters already have a desire to get to

know. Close Ups of the girls faces at the end helps add to the personal narrative,

showing each of their own characters in a dynamic way.

STEP 8: Reflect & Revise

I think in my opening what works best is setting the tone for the film, adding a

whimsical mood immediately with the setting and camera movements and angles. It was

hard to visually communicate how the characters felt seeing Ash in public. I did not want

any dialogue, but I needed it to be clear that seeing Ash in public caused an emotional

shift in the characters. One change I made was what Sara and Izzy debate before running

into Ash. Originally, they talked about if dance battles could be used at settling

arguments. I felt they could debate a topic that related to the overall conflict in the film.
