Choosing Music

My last decision, in the least dramatic way possible, became the hardest decision to make. Ignoring how often I have my head phones on, music is a crucial characteristic of the romantic comedy genre. It helps immediately set the mood for the audience and introduce this picturesque couple as truly picturesque. So this decision was a huge one that I did not think would take me a week to settle on.

My original choice was "Silver Lining" by Laufey. This choice was made the moment I started the class, before the audience survey. The audience survey indicated to me that people really like romance movies that don't end in a happy relationship (boring but I'm a director for the people by the people) so I changed the ideas I had for my film. I then had to change my song, the message of silver lining is too romantic to appeal to the people and overall did not match the whimsical mood.

I started looking through my playlist, one with 2,000 songs, almost all of them about love in some shape or form. I found three I really liked. "About You" by The 1975, "I Thought I Saw Your Face Today" by She & Him, and "Swimming Between Trees" by Flipturn. I love About You by 1975, but this song was the first to go. The only reason being I wanted the lyrics to be easier to be heard. This song is basically whispering the entire time. I was stuck with two really good choices.

I know if I went on and made this film both songs would be used somewhere in the film but which did I want to set the immediate tone was the question. I spent time deciding. I listened to both day in and day out. I landed on...

"Swimming Between Trees" by Flipturn. I did really love "I Thought I Saw Your Face Today" by She & Him. It gave inspiration to the movie title and overall conclusion of the film. I thought it would be cool to elude to the ending through song in the intro, which is why I held on to this option for so long. But my intro is set in a park, with trees, with handheld camera movements. The intro felt more personal, whimsical, and very much ideal of teenagers falling in love and just hanging out somewhere cheap and easy. The lyrics are also very much what I feel our main character feels for her love interest, especially in these moments of initial infatuation that is being captured in the intro.

With this decision in mind, I could finally finish my editting.
